Case Studies Here are some examples of people treated successfully with hyperbaric oxygen therapy
at HOTC.
60 year-old breast cancer survivor with a large non-healing wound of the left breast due to radiation tissue damage. Required weekly surgical debridements, which resulted in necrosis due to inadequate
blood supply to irradiated wound bed. The patient was at risk for necrosis through the chest wall. She received 50 hyperbaric sessions with 100% O2 for 90 minutes@ 2 atmospheres. The wound eventually closed and filled in
with little defect.
37 year-old woman with sickle cell anemia and small vessel disease who had a long-standing non-healing wound of the right ankle. The wound was covered with yellow fibrin slough and draining a large
amount. Going to work at her office was becoming increasingly difficult for her, due to pain and dressing changes. The patient had a brisk response to hyperbaric therapy. The wound was completely closed after 24 hyperbaric sessions
of 100% O2 @ 2.0 ATA.
58 year- old woman with multiple failed graft attempts to treat extensive ulcerations of legs due to small vessel disease. The patient had a very poor response to aggressive medical and surgical
approaches. The clinical improvement with 20 hyperbaric oxygen sessions @ 2.0 ATA for 90 minutes each, was dramatic. She had decreased swelling (edema), no pain or bleeding and was able to wear shoes and resume activities of daily
living such as shopping. After 40 sessions the wounds were completely healed and the overall functional skills of the patient improved significantly.
52 year-old man status post nasopharyngeal cancer with radiation caries.
The patient was scheduled for complete tooth extraction and had an abscess on the left side of his mouth. He received 30 hyperbaric oxygen treatments @ 2.5ATA prior to oral surgery. After whole-mouth tooth extractions the
patient returned to the center, as scheduled, for an additional ten treatments that greatly reduced post-op swelling, pain and healing time. The patient required additional bone removal in order to fit dentures, and therefore
received 10 more hyperbaric sessions after that second surgery. This patient, with severe radiation tissue disease, avoided post-op infection and necrosis and went on to enjoy complete healing of his mouth.
63 year-old woman
with radiation damage to her larynx. The patient received 40 hyperbaric oxygen treatments @ 2.5ATA for late radiation effects of the larynx. She experienced less tightening of the skin on her neck and improvement on her vocal tone
and strain. Improvement was noted on direct exam of the larynx. The patient did not require removal of the larynx as she achieved healing. |
